Abstract
To the editor: In the January issue (1), Jacobs and Kraus described their study of the laboratory differentiation of gonococcal and nongonococcal urethritis in men. That investigation involved obtaining Gram stains and cultures from the urethras of 400 consecutive men who entered DeKalb County Venereal Disease Clinic with symptoms of urethritis. The technicians were trained by the Communicable Disease Center. The major laboratory findings are reproduced in Table 1. On the basis of their data, those authors state that "a carefully examined Gram stain provides an unequivocal, simple, inexpensive, and rapid differential diagnosis" (presumably because 167/(167 + 4) in line
