A Study on Toxic Effect of Vaccinia Virus in Mice with Special Reference to Hematological Changes

Abstract
Summary: High concentrations of vaccinia virus caused death of i.v. inoculated mice within 15 to 24 hr. No multiplication of virus could be demonstrated in the organs of the inoculated animals. Characteristic findings were: a drop of 50% or more in the normal erythrocytes counts within 10 to 12 hr, leukocytosis and lymphocytopenia. Histological examination of the organs revealed a number of changes, most prominent among them were severe hemorrhages in the liver. A toxic effect of the virus seemed to be responsible for the reported findings.
