Virilizing Tumor of the Testis in One Twin

Abstract
A virilizing testicular tumor is reported in an 8-year-old child who is one of identical twins. At operation a benign interstitial cell tumor was removed. Pre and postoperative steroid excretion studies were obtained. 17-KS excretion prior to operation was at the upper limit of normal for his age. Immediately after surgery, the total 17-KS excretion fell abruptly. 17-KS fractionation indicated a two-thirds reduction in the excretion of androsterone and etiocholanolone without much change in the excretion of DHEA and C19O3 steroids. Pregnanediol and pregnanetriol, measurable before operation, were not found postoperatively. The results are discussed and compared with findings reported by others. Following removal of the tumor, the onset of “true” puberty was shown in this patient by a continued somatic growth spurt, enlargement of the remaining testis, and the appearance of FSH in the urine.
