Abstract
After briefly recalling the essential outlines of the work done so far towards practicable medical radiography with radioactive sources, the authors draw attention to the value of the nuclear characteristics of 197Hg in this field. The manufacture of a source consisting of a 0·5 mm bead of mercury is then described. The source is sufficiently intense for human radiography with acceptable exposure times. A number of in vivo radiographs are presented to illustrate the potential of the device and method, particularly in cranial radiography by means of a source placed in the mouth. The relative merits of 197Hg and other radioisotopes (particularly 125I) are discussed. Finally, the possible future improvement of the 197Hg radiography technique described is indicated. Keywords
