Abstract
Using a curetting needle, percutaneous needle biopsy of the pleura was performed on 44 patients. The procedure is simple, safe, and approximately 70 per cent accurate in the diagnosis of subsequently proved malignant or tuberculous effusions. An adequate specimen of tissue was obtained in all but one patient. Results were equally satisfactory in 17 patients who had percutaneous needle biopsies of the pleura in the absence of pleural fluid at the time of biopsy. Keywords
