Abstract
Controlled attention to 1 channel of a dichotic presentation by requiring 24 undergraduate and research students to memorize the list of verbal items presented over that channel. The detection of target words presented in both channels varied according to their serial position in the list. This relationship supports the hypothesis that perceptual factors may influence performance when sequential presentations are involved. The target was reported either immediately on hearing, before recall of the attended message, or after recall of the attended message, but this variable had only slight effects upon the success of report. The effect of reporting the target upon the recall of the attended message is interpreted in terms of the capacity available to the central processor during the stages of encoding and storage.
