Abstract
2% gum acacia suspension of 95% ethanolic extract of Tricosanthes dioica Roxb. [whole plant (a) and aerial part (b)] fed by oral intubation at a dose of 250 mg/kg body weight to male albino rats caused significant blood sugar lowering in fasted model. In glucose loaded model a single dose of T. dioica extract induced very significant depression of peak values. The effect was more pronounced when fed for 21 days. No effect was observed in fed and diabetic rats. On the basis of the scoring method developed in this laboratory T. dioica (score 2.5) can be regarded as a good blood sugar lowering agent in rats. Keywords
