Fibrosarcoma of the Chest Wall Following Resection and Irradiation of Carcinoma of the Breast

Abstract
The case of a patient who developed a fibrosarcoma of her chest wall four years after radical mastectomy and two courses of radiation therapy for carcinoma of the breast is presented. In spite of radical surgical extirpation the sarcoma recurred on several occasions, eventually metastasized, and was responsible for the patient’s death. The microscopic appearance of this tumor and its growth pattern at autopsy is evidence against its being a peculiar variant of carcinoma with a pseudosarcomatous growth pattern. The possible role of irradiation in induction of the sarcoma is discussed.
