The structure of radical pairs in irradiated single crystal of n-eicosane as studied by electron spin resonance

Abstract
The ESR spectra of a single crystal of n‐eicosane have been analyzed. The angular dependence of the fine splitting in ΔMs=1 spectra reveals that several different radical pairs are produced in the single crystal of n‐eicosane irradiated at 77°K. Five different pairs are clearly identified; they are interchain type. Among these five radical pairs four species are produced in the adjacent chains aligned along the b axis; their interspin distances are 4.42, 4.54, 5.22, and 5.33 Å. One other is produced in the chains along the a axis and has the interspin distance of 4.25 Å. The presence of the intrachain radical pairs (biradical) is also suggested. The structure of radical pair found in n‐eicosane was compared with that found in oriented polyethylene.
