Abstract
Infections with parasitic helminths and protozoa are important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Chemotherapy has an important role not only in the treatment of individual patients but also, in conjunction with public health and vector-control measures, in reducing the transmission of parasitic infections. At present, however, there are no vaccines for human parasitic infections, the scientific knowledge necessary to develop antiparasitic drugs is rudimentary, and the mechanisms of action of most antiparasitic drugs are poorly understood.
