Eight-month seedlings of redwood, Port Oxford cedar, bigtree, ponderosa and Monterey pines which had been grown in culture solution were cut off and the resulting root exudate measured. All the trees produced exudate except one specimen of ponderosa pine, with sunflowers and leafy lemon cuttings providing a standard of comparison. A sunflower gave the maximum total exudate with 9.05 ml. but the two Port Oxford cedars gave 5.45 and 1.1 ml. while 2 redwoods produced 1.6 and 1.55 ml. of exudate. A table gives the time and amt. of exudate for each reading.
