Abstract
Several insecticides were tested against a resistant strain of Heliothis virescens (F.), using topical, oral, and injection treatments. The strain showed evidence of a nonspecific type resistance which may be due to the inability of the insecticides 10 penetrate the cuticle. Oral doses were slightly more effective than topical doses but neither were as effective as injected doses. Selection with endrin for 2 generations resulted in a high level of resistance to endrin, increased resistance to DDT, and increased tolerance to toxaphene-DDT (2: 1). After endrin selection the difference in response to injected and topical doses increased, indicating that both DDT and endrin were less effective in penetrating the cuticle.
