Abstract
The Lamarckian problem is a spurious one. No adaptive biological characteristic is ever "acquired" from the environment unless the inner organism is prepared to co-operate, nor is an "hereditary" characteristic ever permanently maintained in the absence of the special environment in which it first appeared. Problems of cellular, individual, and social or phylogenetic development may be re-oriented and unified if higher and lower levels of organization or integration are postulated.
