Abstract
This paper describes how a medical model philosophy was used within a token economy system in a group home for 9 girls. Consequently the girls became passive participants and as a result the token economy system became ineffectual. To improve the situation four recommendations were made. A child should not be labeled during the course of treatment, a child should be allowed to assist in identifying the problem to be dealt with, a child should be actively involved in assessing whether a treatment plan is most suitable for her, and a child should be involved in assessing treatment effectiveness and determining what variables were responsible for improvement. The implementation of these recommendations resulted in significant reductions in acting out and in improvement in interpersonal relationships. Keywords
