PERIARTERITIS NODOSA: RECOGNITION AND CLINICAL SYMPTOMS

Abstract
This report concerns the clinical aspects of the two most common types : 35 cases of periarteritis nodosa and 10 cases of hypersensitivity angiitis. Case records revealed close correlation between clinical and pathological manifestations. Clinically, periarteritis nodosa could be divided into primary and secondary subtypes. Fourteen cases of the former presented diffuse lesions at necropsy after a long clinical course. Twenty-one cases of secondary periarteritis nodosa showed fewer lesions at necropsy with similar distribution and morphology. They demonstrated few clinical findings of periarteritis nodosa. In sharp contrast hypersensitivity angiitis was manifested clinically as a fulminating disease. It is concluded that periarteritis nodosa and hypersensitivity angiitis can be clinically differentiated.
