Abstract
The gas-tric mucosa can be stimulated to secrete by local chemical action of various foods. The gastric digestion of several foods liberates substances which excite gastric secretion by local contact with the gastric mucosa. This confirms Pavlov''s contention. Alcohol in moderation stimulated gastric secretion by local contact. Tincture of gentian stimulated gastric secretion while a water extract failed to do so. Water did not stimulate gastric secretion by local action unless its temp. was higher than that of the body. Strong irritants caused secretion of a large quantity of a "mucoid fluid" containing no acid.
