Abstract
Vaginal smears were made during the normal estrus cycle of 14 albino rats. The smears were fixed in ether-ethanol and stained with Shorr stain. Certain groups of rats were subjected to stress. Disturbances were noted in the estrus cycles of all rats in the stress group. One to three cycles occurred in each rat during the first 2 weeks of the stress period. The layer index for superficial cells did not reach that observed in the normal estrus rats during the first two weeks of stress, but during the last two weeks of stress a persistent diestrus state was established or a slight rise in the layer index occurred. Periodic variations were observed during normal estrus cycles in the relative proportions of cells from different layers of the vaginal epithelium, in cytolysis, in the clumping and curling of the edges of the superficial cells and in the occurrence of mucus and leucocytes. Keywords
