Abstract
The X-ray emission from the region within ∼ 2° of the Galactic Centre has been studied with a rocket-borne coded-mask telescope and also with the RMC on board the Ariel V satellite. The extended region or complex of sources observed by the Uhuru satellite (3U 1743 − 29 = GCX) is shown to contain three other sources in addition to the variable source A 1742 − 294 previously observed with the Ariel V RMC. In addition, during the rocket flight, X-ray bursts were observed from three different positions within the region. The bursts were of lower intensity than those previously reported but were much more frequent. Possible relationships between the observed X-ray activity in this region and that observed in other parts of the Galaxy and in the nuclei of active galaxies are discussed. Keywords
