Vaccination of Chickens with Mycoplasma gallisepticum

Abstract
Of 518 immature chickens vaccinated with live pathogenic M. gallisepticum via the muscles of the lower leg 36% were immune to subsequent homologous challenge via the posterior thoracic air sac. Eight of 9 groups of these chickens were protected against only one log10 dilution or less of challenge material (ID50S calculated by the method of Reed and Muench). The maximum protection evident among these birds was 80- 89%, or a 2 logio difference between ID50S of control and vaccinated groups. Multiple vaccination of chickens with M. gallisepticum had no significant effect on either egg production or hatchability, the agent could not be cultured from eggs of these birds, and progeny of such chickens did not exhibit detectable immunity of M. gallisepticum.
