Abstract
The deformation of silver wires at high temperatures and low applied stresses has been investigated experimentally. Considerable evidence has been obtained that the crystal grains in the wires deform by the self-diffusion mechanism postulated, by Nabarro and considered in detail by Herring (1950). A new explanation of the development of kinking is advanced to account for the experimental observations. It is shown that surface energy effects can give rise to offsetting in a direction which causes the wires to shorten. Keywords
