Abstract
The mucosal epithelium of the duodenum of BCF1 mice exposed to 220 r/day for 1, 7 14, 17, and 18 days was compared to that of nonirradiated controls. The generation time of the duodenal crypt cells of mice irradiated for 1, 7, and 14 days, and of the controls, was determined. Since it was found that cells are held up between the end of synthesis and the completion of mitosis, the initial effect (at 1 day) may be similar to the effect produced by a single exposure. When exposure is continued, there is an attempt to compensate for cell loss by a speeding up of the generation cycle which is primarily due to a reduction of G1.Keywords
