Abstract
Otoliths from fishes collected at 45° N and 74° N latitude were examined with the scanning electron microscope. The relationship between the numbers of microstructural growth increments and the estimated ages of the specimens supported previous contentions that such increments are deposited with a daily periodicity, even in fishes living above the Arctic Circle. The solar light regime above the Arctic Circle is discussed in addition to other environmental cues which could possibly trigger the deposition of daily growth increments in fish otoliths. Keywords
