Abstract
The anomalies in electrophoretic patterns of protein mixtures are considered theoretically for specified conditions, and the equations derived are applied to the study of normal and pathological sera. A coefficient, K1, relating the change in migration velocity of protein ions to the change in protein concentration was detd. experimentally for human serum albumin. The calculation of the concn. relationship in a boundary region of 2 components reveals that the relative concn. as deduced from the apparent concn. changes at the boundaries give a grossly erroneous picture of the concn. in the original soln. when the value for the relative difference in the mobilities is in the region of K1. The degree of separation of 2 boundaries depends on the total concn. The examination for electrophoretic homogeneity should be carried out over a range of low concn. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
