Abstract
A study of lapsed and successful relationships is reported in which the following hypotheses were tested and confirmed. First, that friends who had chosen, after 12 months' acquaintance in communal quarters, to live with one another in more personal accommodation would be found to be more similar in personal constructs than they were to those they chose not to live with (p < 0.05). Second, that, of these relationships, the ones that were continuing after 8 months would be different in respect of the type of similarity that they manifested from the type observable in those of the relationships that lapsed (p < 0.001). The results are considered in terms of a stage theory of acquaintance development.Keywords
