Occultations by Kuiper belt objects

Abstract
A new method for detecting occultations by Kuiper belt objects is discussed. The detection of occultations by Kuiper belt objects would confirm whether the population of the Kuiper belt is sufficient to supply the observed flux of short-period comets. By observing near quadrature it is possible to detect occultations with durations of tens of seconds, allowing deep CCD images to be used to detect occultations. The approximate rate of detectable occultations being recorded by the MACHO project is determined.
