Abstract
In both relA+ and relA− derivatives, the biosynthesis of peptidoglycan, lipid intermediates, and nucleotide precursors abruptly halted at the onset of diauxic lag from glucose to lactose with a concomitant accumulation of guanosine 5′-diphosphate 3′-diphosphate (ppGpp). These results are consistent with the proposal that ppGpp is involved in inhibiting the incorporation of disaccharide-pentapeptide into peptidoglycan and in regulating nucleotide precursor synthesis. Keywords
