The Black Hunter, Leptothrips mali (Fitch)

Abstract
L. mali is predacious on scale insects, lepidopterous eggs, thrips, red spiders and mites. It is of minor importance in controlling crop pests. The adults hibernate and there are 2-3 generations a yr. The eggs are laid singly on leaves chiefly. The larva passes through 2 instars which period consumes 12-15 days. The total prepupal and pupal stage lasts 6-10 days. Pupation occurs under bark in curled leaves. Each [female] produces 1-2 larvae only. It is generally distributed throughout the U. S. on many plants and is found from sea level to 9000 ft. altitude. All stages are descr. and the synonymy of the sp. is listed.
