Abstract
A comparison of the blood pictures of 30 active and 18 hibernating ground squirrels, Citellus tridecemlineatus (Mitchill) was made. Hibernation was induced, during the winter mos. when it would normally occur in nature, by placing the animals in a cold room (40-42[degree] F.) for periods varying from 8-28 days. The following changes, due to hibernation, were noted: An avg. decrease of 37.8% in the number of erythrocytes, and 25.7% in the Hb content. An avg. decrease of 2.3% in the total white cell count with the following changes in the differential count: A 34.4% decrease in the number of neutrophils, an increase of 21.3% and 144.7% in the number of lymphocytes and monocytes, respectively. A small but consistent decrease in the sp. gr. A decrease of 16.3% in the creatinine content. A decrease of 14.5% in the glucose content. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
