Abstract
The study of pigments used in manuscript illumination has been limited by the lack of instrumentation to accurately identify pigments without taking a sample. A project is now under way using a number of non-destructive techniques, but primarily Raman laser spectroscopy. A brief outline of the way the Raman works is provided and an explanation of its advantages for conservators and conservation. A data bank has been established and the article explains the short and long term aims of the project.
