Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal agent that is useful for the treatment of certain inflammatory joint diseases. Its use is not necessary when salicylate therapy is effective. When indomethacin is given concomitantly with corticosteroids, the dosage of the steroids often can be reduced. Further controlled trials are needed to determine the usefulness of indomethacin as compared to other anti-inflammatory drugs. Although the adverse reactions associated with this drug are not hazardous, those affecting the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract may be sufficiently severe to limit its use.
