Abstract
A description is given of a new method for the assessment of the creasing properties of fabrics. In this crease test, the fabrics are creased in a reproducible, non-random way. The creased fabrics are ranked by subjective evaluation under standardised conditions. Photographic standards may be of use in this judgement. The effect of the atmospheric conditions during creasing and recovery of the creases proved to be considerable. Laboratory tests in the standard atmosphere are of limited value in predicting the performance during wear. This part of the investigation was carried out with fabrics from different fibres, viz., natural and man-made fibres and blends of these. The correlation between this crease-test result and the performance of garments during wear was investigated with the aid of a limited number of wear tests with suits of polyester wool (55/45). The effect of some variations in cloth construction on the crease properties was studied with fabrics made from 100% spun polyester yarn. The effect of some finishing operations on the crease-recovery of polyester fabrics was investigated as well. The crease test shows that the crease-recovery of fabrics may be affected by pressing with a Hoffman press. The correlation between the crease-recovery and some fibre and fabric properties is briefly discussed. Keywords
