Abstract
The relative effectiveness of a minnow seine and a backpack electroshocker was compared in shoreline surveys at three permanent stations in the Columbia River during 1977 and 1978. We collected 22 species offish with the backpack electroshocker and 14 species with the seine. The beach seine more effectively captured schooling fry over even substrate. Electro shocking was a better method for sampling over irregular substrate and areas with stronger current. More demersal and shelter-seeking resident species to age II were sampled by electroshocker. About twice as many salmonids were taken by seine as by electroshocker but more cottids and cyprinids were taken by electroshocker than by seine. Both methods provided qualitative information for determining population trends. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
