Abstract
We present a generalised approach to color image display, based on exploiting the natural processes of human visual perception. We suggest that to allow intuitive and effective data interpretation, a data display should always be recognisable as a realistic scene, with individual data variables represented by scene properties such as surface height or color. This display approach is realised within a computational framework which incorporates computational vision models, and scene synthesis techniques from computer graphics. The framework is based on a perceptually uniform color space, and includes the modelling of color display processes for controlled and reproducible image generation. Keywords
