Abstract
A case of cyclic oculomotor paralysis is reported. This syndrome undoubtedly is rare; only 40 cases have been described since 1884, almost exclusively in the ophthalmology literature. The manifestations, sufficiently striking that they likely would not go undetected, consist of unilateral oculomotor paralysis with complete ptosis lasting several seconds to a minute, during waking and sleep. Attacks occur many times an hour, usually spontaneously, but may be induced by specific volitional eye movements. This reported case is typical in semeiology, unusual in that there was no antecedent ocular defect, and unique in that a definite underlying etiology (a brainstem tumor) has been established.
