A DNA-Reacting Factor in Serum of a Patient with Lupus Erythematosus Diffusus.

Abstract
The serum of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus fixes complement and gives a precipitin reaction with pure DNAs prepared from human leukocyte (normal and leukemic), calf thymus and rabbit spleen. Concentrations of 1 [mu]g/ml were still active and no differences in reactivity were found between DNAs of different origin. Treatment with DNA-ase, but not with chymotrypsin, abolished any reactivity. RNA (from human leukocytes and from yeast) and a number of other macromolecular antigens did not react with this lupus serum. The positive reaction of the serum with a treponemic extract was also shown to be due to the presence of DNA in the extract.
