Abstract
This paper describes an amplifier designed for use in a soft particle spectrometer on the ISIS series of scientific satellites. The amplifier design reflects the satellite constraints of low power (∼90 mW), low weight (120 g), and small size (∼10×3×2.5 cm). It uses a voltage sensitive front end which accepts multiplier pulses ranging from about 0.5 to 50 mV and produces output pulses of uniform amplitude and duration suitable for driving a counter. Dynamic limiting is used to produce a variable gain depending on the amplitude of the input pulse. This allows maximum gain for small pulses, avoids heavy saturation by large pulses, and minimizes recovery time. The amplifier has full sensitivity for input pulse rates up to 20 MHz for a uniform test signal. Keywords
