Kidneys and intestines of 192 carp (Cyprinus carpio) and 49 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) from five different sites in the Great Lakes were examined for enteric bacteria. Bacteria were identified using conventional methods, the New Improved Enterotube, and the API-20E System. In decreasing order of frequency, the 159 enteric bacteria isolated included members of the following genera: Proteus (70), Enterobacter (58), Providencia (12), Citrobacter (11), Salmonella (3), Serratia (3), and Escherichia (2).
