Codling Moth Control by Release of Radiation-Sterilized Moths in a Commercial Apple Orchard1

Abstract
Release of radiation-sterilized Laspeyresia pomonella (I..) in a commercial apple orchard in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia from 1966 to 1968 resulted in 0.003, 0.095, and 0.710% injured fruit at harvest in 1966, 1%7, and 1968, respectively. All insecticides for codling moth control were omitted until July 1968, when 2/3 of the orchard was sprayed with azinphosmethyl because of an accidental release of substerile moths. Chemical sprays to control mites and other insect pests were selected and timed so as to do the least possible injury to the codling moth.
