Abstract
Summary A total of 93 patients suffering from spondylitis ankylopoetica for iridocyclitis were examined. Uveitis was found in 32 patients, i. e., in 35 % of cases. In 13 patients iridocyclitis had occurred prior to the manifestations of spondylitis. In 19 patients spondylitis had manifested itself prior to the occurrence of iridocyclitis. 25 patients (27 %) had experienced recurrent iridocyclitis. In view of the frequent affection of the eye in spondylitis ankylopoetica, it cannot be overemphasized that the ophthalmologist must consider spondylitis whenever he meets with iritis, particulary recurrent iritis, especially if there is a history of sciatica. It is, therefore, imperative that in such cases rheumatological examination and radiological investigation of the sacroiliac joints and the spine be carried out. Keywords
