In Vitro Thrombosis in Thrombotic and Hemorrhagic Diseases

Abstract
Artificial in vitro thrombi were produced in native shed blood by a method that causes a thrombus to form in flowing blood. Thrombus formation time and structure were studied in relation to platelet aggregation and fibrin coagulation in health and disease. The process of thrombus formation in vitro was described and compared with in vivo thrombosis. The initiation of platelet aggregation was considered with particular reference to the role of thrombin. Alterations in both time of formation and structure were particularly striking in some of the hemorrhagic disorders studied, but were not observed in cases with thrombosis or thrombotic tendency.
