Abstract
An apparatus and a procedure are described for preparing liquid anhydrous NH3 (LAA) of a desired 15N concentration and a cold‐jacketed syringe for dispensing the LAA. Preparation of LAA was accomplished by reacting 15N‐labeled (NH4)2SO4 (30‐50 atom % 15N) with a 2 M NaOH solution and allowing the resultant 15N‐labeled NH3 gas to mix with reagent grade anhydrous NH3 gas dispensed from a lecture bottle (38.5‐ by 5.1‐cm cylinder). The resulting gas mixture was condensed and drained into a collection vessel from which it could be withdrawn, measured, and dispensed with specially built cold‐jacketed syringes. With the apparatus and procedure described here, 10 mL of LAA containing 0.7 to 2.0 atom % 15N can be prepared and applied quantitatively in amounts ranging from 25 (15.21 mg NH3‐N) to 500 µL (296.98 mg NH3‐N). A detailed description of how to construct and operate the 15N‐labeled LAA preparation apparatus and dispensing syringes are discussed.Funding Information
