Abstract
A formal theory for the magnetic field changes induced in the transport properties of paramagnetic gases (the Senftleben effects) is developed. In order to illustrate the formal theory, it is applied to a calculation of the low-pressure Senftleben effects for molecular oxygen. The calculated results are compared with experiment and quite good agreement is shown to exist. All kinetic collision cross sections relevant to these effects have been extracted and listed. One conclusion arising from this analysis is that O2 has a slightly more nonspherical intermolecular interaction potential than N2.Keywords
