Day Hospitals' Cost and Effectiveness: A Summary

Abstract
A review of the literature concerning the effectiveness and cost of geriatric day hospitals revealed a large number of enthusiastic descriptive studies and four randomized control studies. One of the four studies demonstrated credible improvement in physical and emotional function in the day hospital versus a conventional care control group. The three randomized studies in which costs were examined revealed, however, substantially greater costs in the day hospital group.
