Abstract
The optimal age to recognize the existence of a hearing defect should be infancy, and preferably even the newborn period. For this reason many pediatricians are installing some form of audiometric testing in their offices. Here is a review of the present stage of development of methods for identifying hearing impairment early in life. The earlier a child's deafness is recognized, the faster and more successful will be medical rectification or the starting of essential rehabilitative approaches.
