Abstract
The Fe II oscillator strengths of Warner have previously been shown to contain a systematic error, the size of which depends upon the energy of the upper level of the transition. The present paper shows that this error should affect all of the oscillator strengths of Warner for the second spectra of the iron group. A correction formula for the results of Warner is developed and the corrected f-values are compared with other measured data for Ti II, V II and Fe II. The comparisons show that the correction improves the usefulness of Warner's results and that the corrected f-values contain no large systematic dependence on wavelength, upper or lower level energy, or line strength. Solar abundances calculated using the original and the corrected Warner f-values are compared with currently recommended abundances for the iron group elements. The corrected f-values provide more consistent results. The semi-empirical oscillator strength data of Kurucz & Peytremann for Fe I, Ti II and V II are also compared with measured data in order to assess the accuracy of these calculations. The absolute scale of the calculated f-values is roughly correct but a small fraction of the data are subject to errors of a factor of 10 or more. Keywords
