Abstract
A cell-free enzyme soln., presumably penicillinase, was prepd. from an aerobic spore-forming bacterium, apparently Bacillus sub-tilis, which was isolated from a contaminated Penicillium notatum culture. Upon adding 0.03% NaHC03 there was a concomitant evolution of CO2 gas which ceased after 1 hr. A sample removed from the Warburg respirometer showed no penicillin remaining.
