THE DIAGNOSIS of phytobezoar by gastroscopic biopsy has, as far as I know, never been reported. It therefore seems appropriate to report the following two cases of phytobezoar in which these vegetable-matter, gastric concretions, at first strongly suspected to be gastric tumors, were accurately diagnosed only by gastroscopic biopsy. Report of Cases Case 1.— A 48-year-old lawyer was first admitted to this hospital because of recurrent episodes of epigastric pain of 12 years' duration. Twelve years prior to his admission he had the sudden onset of vomiting after the ingestion of some fatty food. This was immediately followed by severe, steady, nonradiating epigastric pain which was localized to an area only 2 cm in diameter. The pain, accompanied by anorexia, lasted for 2 days without remission and without the patient vomiting further; it was relieved spontaneously.
