Abstract
Motion pictures of the activity of the lips in speech production have been taken with synchronized tape recordings. In the search for a limited set of lip parameters, advantage was taken of the fact that a three-dimensional approximation of the lip contours can be made by means of segments of power functions and straight lines. Thus the locations of the contours in the midsagittal plane and at the mouth corners were measured and found to make possible fairly accurate predictions of shape and opening area. Data on the jaw dependence of the parameters selected were acquired for each talker individually. By subtracting the contribution of the jaw opening in all parameters, an estimate of labialization proper was obtained. The interdependencies among these that appear on applying this correction are discussed and their time-varying behavior in vowels is illustrated and related to spectrographic indications of lingual articulation in adjacent consonants. Keywords
