Abstract
A renormalization-group analysis of the classical theory of metastability is given. It is shown that below the critical point there is a "spinodal" fixed point associated with the Van der Waals loop in the mean-field equation of state. An analysis of the linearized renormalization equations correctly yields the singularity in the free energy near the spinodal point. Keywords
