Abstract
The application of the fractional Fourier transform to optical propagation problems is discussed. As illustrative examples, diffraction in a free medium as well as propagation through optical fibres are analysed with the fractional Fourier transform formalism. The conceptual and practical advantages of this new formulation are noted. Keywords
